The most common would be just behind the intake manifold to the left drivers side of the distributor. Another place is just above the oil filter mounting boss. The manual guage you purchase should have all the needed fittings and tubing. Be careful however, not to overtighten and break of the tee fitting in the block. Pipe fittings are tapered, so when they're tight I have seen too many guys get carried away It allows you to keep the dash warning light functional along with the new mechanical oil guage.

If you use a electric guage you'll have to use both sender units with the Tee-fitting. I like using the top of the block at the rear. Its not a big deal, but sometimes putting the senders down by the filter can be optimistic.

That port recognizes pressure that enters the filter. The upper port is a measure of the pressure AFTER the oil has passed through the filter and a few other things.

One measures the pump's ability. The other measures the pressure actually seen by the engine. Best place is rear of the engine behind the intake manifold, driver's side of the distributor. Might take a mirror and laying on top the engine to see the port, but that's the most commonly used place. You don't want to use the cheap plastic stuff that usually comes with the gauges, which can get melted, cut, pinched or cracked, then give you a gusher of a leak. Remove the sending unit with a wrench. Locate the double male-end compression fitting in your new gauge kit.

It has threads on both ends, and a six-sided section in the middle so you can turn and hold it with a wrench. Look closely at this part. You will see that the threads on one end taper slightly. This is called a "pipe fitting. Check to see if the threads on the pipe fitting end match the sending unit you just removed. If they do, wrap two turns of Teflon tape around the threads in the opposite direction of the threads, and tighten the fitting in the engine block where you removed the sending unit.

If the threads do not match, find one of the adapters in the gauge kit that matches the old sending unit, wrap it with Teflon tape and install it in the engine block. Wrap the compression fitting and tighten it into the adapter. Slide a compression nut onto the plastic tubing. It looks like a little six-sided cap with a hole in the center of it. Slide a ferrule--which looks like a little brass bead-- onto the tubing. Place the tubing against the male end of the compression fitting in the engine block.

  7. While maintaining pressure on the tubing, push the nut onto the fitting and tighten with a wrench. Route the tubing carefully into the passenger compartment by locating a place on the firewall where wiring runs through it. The firewall is the rear part of your engine compartment, to which the brake master cylinder is attached; you may be able to slide the tubing through there.
