I know this is a long shot. The Ramble is probably busiest shortly after sunset, before it is completely dark. You might want to consider going while it is still light to scope out the lay of the land and find your way around a little bit, since some of the most active areas get pretty dark and are not well lit at night. As noted before there is work going on with large areas fenced off, and areas where the work is finished are now free of brush and filled with bright lights.
Central Park Rambles
Hope you enjoy your visit to NYC Oh yeah, it is a bad idea to stay past closing time at 1: The cops can be very aggressive and will ticket people for being in the park past that time. No idea what they would do to a foreign visitor. Go north on SR for 8. Park in the parking area on SR Walk up Williamsville Rd, until you reach the first little drive on the right called Station Rd.
Walk toward the wooden fence and past a small shack which almost blocks the path. Then walk along the trail which follows the river for about a mile.
Walk westward into the park and follow the paved paths in a North West direction almost a 45 degree angle from 72 until you find the Boathouse. The action starts just behind the Boathouse and spreads north and west from there.
Go in the daylight to get use to the area. Between 72nd and 77th street.
Between 72nd and 77th street Hours: Cops close it at 1 am. Many stay way after 1 just gotta watch for the cops. You can mostly always spor a cop car coming into the area. All throughout the rambles. Please don't drop used Kleenex or on the ground This tells the cops the amount of activity happening in each spot. Just the cop crackdown after 1 am What's the action like now that the weather has warmed up and the cover is better?

Why didn't Paul go to the police? God, are you crazy? The terrors of leaving his closet were more real to him than the terrors of the night.
The Brutal Attacks on Gay Men in the Ramble -- New York Magazine
The Ramble is a beautiful setting for such horrors. Around these sheltering trees, around the asphalt walkways that wind through the Ramble, are man-tall thickets of bushes. There have always been parts of our city that have served as gay cruising areas: But Central Park West, and particularly the Ramble, has retained its popularity for 50 years. The afternoon after I talked to Paul, I met Jerry, an attractive man of medium build in his mid-thirties, sitting on top of a large outcropping of rock in the middle of the Ramble. His T-shirt hanging out of his back pocket and his tanned runner's legs dangling his Adidas over the edge of the rock, Jerry tells of the first time he heard about the Ramble.
It was the only place I had heard of where I could find someone who was like me.
So, the second night after I got back to New York, in , I went there in the early evening, right after work. My God, I never knew there were so many gay people! For the first time I didn't feel like a freak. I was shy but people were so open I soon got over that.
